Planning estimate - not a substitute for a pressure-tested engineering design.

Formula

Emitters = floor( run length ÷ emitter spacing ) + 1. Total flow (GPH) = emitters × emitter GPH; GPM = GPH ÷ 60. Capacity check compares GPM against usable valve capacity (capacity × (1 − margin)).

Example

100 ft of 18-inch-spacing 0.5 GPH tubing: 100 ÷ 1.5 + 1 ≈ 67 emitters, total 33.5 GPH ≈ 0.56 GPM - far below a 10 GPM valve. Even 500 ft of line only draws ~2.8 GPM; valve capacity is rarely the limit with drip - line length and pressure loss are.

Assumptions

  • Uniform emitter spacing along a single lateral run.
  • Pressure-compensating emitters assumed for long runs.
  • Manufacturer limits on maximum run length (typically 100-250 ft per lateral) still apply regardless of capacity.

Limitations

This tool is a planning aid for DIY design and pre-design work. It does not replace an on-site pressure and flow test, a catch-cup uniformity test, or local code and backflow requirements. For steep slopes, long pipe runs, large elevation changes or commercial-scale systems, have a qualified irrigation designer verify the plan before installation.

What This Means

Drip zones rarely exceed valve capacity - the practical limits are maximum run length and elevation changes. That is why drip beds are split by area and pipe routing, not by flow.

Next Step

Schedule the zone with the Drip Run Time Calculator, or plan the bed from the plants up with the Drip Emitter Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many GPH does drip line use per 100 ft?

At 18-inch spacing with 0.5 GPH emitters: about 67 emitters ≈ 34 GPH (~0.56 GPM). At 12-inch spacing with 1 GPH emitters it is 101 GPH (~1.7 GPM) - spacing and emitter choice dominate.

How long can one drip line run be?

Manufacturer maximums are typically 100-250 ft per lateral depending on tubing size and emitter spacing - check the spec sheet. Capacity is almost never the constraint; pressure loss along the line is.
