Sprinkler Zone Calculator

How many sprinkler heads does your lawn need, and how many zones will it take? Enter your area, sprinkler type and measured water supply - this calculator plans the zones and warns you if the flow does not fit.

Planning estimate - not a substitute for a pressure-tested engineering design.

Formula

Heads = ceil( area ÷ (spacing)² ) for head-to-head coverage. Total flow = heads × head GPM. Usable flow = available GPM × (1 − margin ÷ 100). Zones = ceil( total flow ÷ usable flow ); flow per zone = heads ÷ zones × head GPM.

Example

2,000 sq ft lawn, 15 ft spacing, 2.5 GPM spray heads, 10 GPM supply, 20% margin: heads = 2000 ÷ 225 ≈ 9; total flow = 22.5 GPM; usable = 8 GPM; zones = ceil(22.5 ÷ 8) = 3 zones at ~7.5 GPM each. Capacity check: total exceeds usable - split into zones.

Assumptions

  • Head-to-head square grid over the area; boundary and corner heads add 1-3 in practice.
  • All heads in a zone share one valve; head flow is from the nozzle chart at design pressure.
  • Hydrozones (different plant types) should be split by plant need, not only by flow.
  • Result is a planning estimate, not a pressure-tested engineering design.

Limitations

This tool is a planning aid for DIY design and pre-design work. It does not replace an on-site pressure and flow test, a catch-cup uniformity test, or local code and backflow requirements. For steep slopes, long pipe runs, large elevation changes or commercial-scale systems, have a qualified irrigation designer verify the plan before installation.

What This Means

If the capacity check fails, you have three levers: switch to lower-flow nozzles (MP rotators cut flow ~3x), upsize the supply line, or accept more zones. Never plan a zone at 100% of measured capacity - pressure drops when everything runs at once.

Next Step

Build the watering schedule with the Irrigation Run Time Calculator (flow and area carried over), or re-measure supply with the GPM Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sprinkler heads fit on one zone?

With typical residential flow (8-12 GPM) and 2.5 GPM spray heads, expect 3-5 heads per zone; lower-flow MP rotators can push that to 10+. The honest answer always starts from your measured available flow.

How many zones does a 2,000 sq ft lawn need?

About 3 zones of spray heads at 10 GPM supply, or 1-2 zones with MP rotators. The calculator above gives the exact split from your inputs.

What does the capacity check mean?

It compares total head flow against your usable supply (after safety margin). 'OK' means one zone could run it all; 'EXCEEDED' means the heads must be split across multiple valves - which is normal for most yards.

Why keep a safety margin instead of maxing out the zone?

Pressure drops when everything runs at once. A 10-30% buffer keeps the last head on the line throwing to full radius instead of dribbling.
